While collision damage gets the most attention, environmental factors silently degrade your bumper over time. Here's how to protect against the elements.
UV Exposure
Prolonged sun exposure causes paint to fade and plastic to become brittle. Park in shade or covered areas when possible, and maintain a regular waxing schedule to provide UV protection.
Road Salt and Chemicals
Winter road salt and deicing chemicals are highly corrosive. Regular washing during winter months—especially the underside and bumper area—prevents chemical buildup that damages both paint and plastic.
Tree Sap and Bird Droppings
These organic substances are surprisingly damaging. Tree sap dissolves clear coat, and bird droppings are acidic enough to etch paint permanently. Remove them promptly with appropriate cleaners.
Temperature Extremes
Rapid temperature changes can stress plastic bumpers, especially if they already have minor damage. Existing cracks may propagate, and adhesion points may weaken. Address minor damage early before seasonal changes make it worse.
